Growing Futures with Ledbury Primary School
Sustainable Ledbury has secured funding to refurbish and expand Ledbury Primary School’s allotments. This initiative is more than just a gardening project—it’s an investment in education, wellbeing, and helping to create a sustainable future.
‘Growing Futures’ has been made possible through funding from Herefordshire Community Foundation.
The grant will enable much-needed improvements to existing allotment areas, including repairing raised beds, and increasing their number. This will extend the growing space. These upgrades will make the allotments more accessible, productive, and enjoyable for pupils and staff alike.
By transforming underused or aging plots into vibrant growing spaces, the project creates an outdoor learning area where children can learn through hands-on experience. After the Easter holidays, work will start to prepare and secure the area, with new and extended fencing, rebuilding the raised beds and installing a fruit cage, in readiness for this season’s planting activities.
These improvements will provide the opportunity for children to gain practical knowledge about food, nature, and sustainability, learning how fruits and vegetables grow from seeds to harvest. Spending time outdoors and engaging in gardening will support both physical health and mental wellbeing. Pupils will develop their sense of responsibility, teamwork, and patience, skills that extend far beyond the garden and will share this with others in the school community. Growing their own fruit and vegetables will encourage a greater understanding of where food comes from and will help develop healthier eating habits and a deeper appreciation of fresh, local produce.
Sustainable Ledbury will play a strong role in ensuring the long-term success of the project including:
· additional Volunteers: Bringing in local volunteers to assist with maintenance and development.
· Providing advice and connections that link gardening activities to wider environmental topics such as biodiversity and climate awareness.
· Working with teachers and pupils to encourage learning about gardening techniques and seasonal growing practices.
It is anticipated that this partnership will ensure the allotments remain a thriving, educational resource rather than a one-off improvement.
A Call for Community Support
While the grant provides a strong foundation, additional support from the community is warmly welcomed. Donations of seeds, plants, compost, tools, and other gardening materials can make a significant difference in expanding what the project can achieve.
Local residents, businesses, and gardening enthusiasts are encouraged to contribute—helping to nurture not just plants, but the next generation of environmentally conscious citizens.

As the gardens grow, so too will the confidence, skills, and awareness of the children who tend them—planting seeds for a more sustainable future.
The benefits don’t have to stop at the school gates. Families can also feel the positive effects.
Children can act as ‘ambassadors’, encouraging their families to grow their own food. Increasing awareness of sustainable practices can lead to more environmentally conscious households, and ones where shared experiences are created through producing and cooking home grown produce.
